Global Standards
JICWEBS has agreed standards for traffic certification as conducted by the UK and Ireland industry owned auditor, ABCe - www.abce.org.uk . These standards include globally recognised metric definitions covering site-centric Web measurement, email and other electronic media technologies. These definitions have been adopted by all IFABC (International Federation of Audit Bureaux of Circulations, www.ifabc.org) members (36 in 34 countries).
ABCe, like its sister organisations in the IFABC, is able to deliver local market certification to global standards through the application of common rules, including:
- Exclusion of internal traffic.
- Exclusion of robotic traffic.
- Interpretive and substantive tests by the auditor.
These standards can also be browsed interactively by technology, medium or keyword using the Jargon Buster.
Website metric definitions
These are the main definitions current in the UK and Ireland website traffic measurement industry:
Unique User/Browser
A unique and valid identifier. Sites may use IP+User-Agent and/or Cookie .
Page Impression
A file or a combination of files sent to a User as a result of that User's request being received by the server.
In effect, one request by a valid User should result in one Page Impression being claimed.
Unique User/Browsers and Page Impressions can be calculated for AJAX, Flash, Automated and HTML Chat traffic. Page Impressions can also be calculated for WAP and Interactive TV devices.
Visit
A series of one or more Page Impressions, served to a single Unique User/Browser, which ends when that User/Browser has not made a Page Impression for a 30-minute period.
A Visit is effectively a near-continuous burst of activity by a valid User.
Visit Duration
The total time in seconds for all Visits of two or more Page Impressions, divided by the total number of Visits of two or more Page Impressions.
Search
The first Page Impression sent to a valid User as a result of that User's search request being received by the server.
Stream
An indicator of a media file stream sent to a valid User as a result of that User's request being received by the server.
Streams must be shown as Live or On-Demand (audio or Video). A Live Stream is defined as a stream which reflects a true broadcast model, is of no fixed length, is always available and offers constantly changing content. An On-Demand Stream is defined as a stream that is of fixed content and length.
Stream Duration
The total elapsed time in seconds between the first and last recorded indicator of each Stream sent to a valid User.
Ad metric definitions
Ad Impression
A file or a combination of files sent to a valid Ad User as an individual advertisement as a result of that Ad User's request being received by the server.
Ad Click
The activation of a hypertext link on an Ad Impression by a valid Ad User.
Ad Impressions and Users can be calculated for WAP and Interactive TV devices.
Ad User/Browser
The total number of unique combinations of a valid identifier contributing to the Ad Impressions served. IP+UserAgent and/or Cookie may be used.
Email metric definitions
Distribution (Net)
The total number of emails successfully sent as part of a single campaign/distribution to all (SMTP) addresses on the distribution list.
Distribution (Gross)
The total number of emails sent as part of a single campaign/distribution to all (SMTP) addresses on the distribution list.
Percentage Bounced
The total number of emails in the gross distribution that generated an NDN (SMTP delivery failure) measured at least 24 hours after the time of the last email sent, expressed as a percentage of the gross distribution.
Duplication
The total number of identical SMTP addresses in the distribution list expressed as a percentage of the gross distribution, rounded down to the nearest whole number.
Registered Address
A contactable SMTP address in the distribution list that has requested the email service.
Opt-In
A unique SMTP address that has been added to the distribution list as a result of a positive action by the address user.
Other Platforms
Metrics have been developed by the UK and Ireland internet industry to measure Stream (Audio/Video), PDA, SMS and chatroom (IRC) traffic. These include:
Stream
An indicator of a media file stream sent to a valid User as a result of that User's request being received by the server.
Stream Unique User/Browser
A unique and valid identifier representing a device which has requested a Stream.
PDA Synch
A synch by a PDA device with the site (or channel).
SMS Message
A file or combination of files sent to a valid user's SMS-enabled device by the server.
SMS User
The total number of unique device IDs recorded in the log files for the SMS Messages sent.
Unique Chat User (Non-HTML)
A unique combination of an IP address, a Nickname and a 5 second minimum stay (logged time in minus logged time out).
